As part of its firm belief in the importance of social service and the need to invest youth potential in this context, the university launched the annual Al Yamamah University Social Responsibility Award (ATHAR) for students. The valuable prize is a 5 days fully paid trip to Moscow to attend the FIFA World Cup 2018 opening game between Saudi Arabia and Russia.
Students of the College of Engineering and Architecture, representing the university, took part in the Colors of Saudi Exhibition organized between 12 and 16 December 2017 by the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCTH).
Displaying their creativity in photography, sketches and maquettes design and interior and exterior design, COEA students gave a living example of what they learn in class and what the university is helping them with to unleash their creative potential.
Colors of Saudi is an annual four-day event that includes a large exhibition for photography and short tourism films, an honoring ceremony, training workshops, specialized lectures in photography and tourism, tours for photographers, traveling exhibitions throughout the year as well as venues for photography unions, such as the Union of Arab Photographers and local and international photography academies and training centers.
Students and faculty members of the College of Computer & Information Science took part in the 1st Saudi Application Expo held at Movenpick between 14 and 16 December, 2017 and sponsored by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.
Held under the title, “My Innovations in My Applications”, the 1st Saudi Applications Expo is the first exhibition of mobile applications in the region, hosting the innovative talents and creative projects in this field and showcasing the best examples that seek to satisfy the market needs and the investment opportunities.
The CCIS students who manned the booth displayed their projects in the field of mobile applications, gave detailed answers to inquiries and questions by the exhibition visitors, and took part in the exhibition workshops.
Dr. Mohan Silaba and Dr. Amjad Khan from CCIS gave two workshops that focused on the internet for business and the issues of development and utilizations of mobile applications.
Deputy Head of HR & Development at Riyad Bank Mr. Khalid Almalki, gave a lecture entitled, “Development of the Human Capital” to the MBA class of 2017-2018, focusing mainly on the industrial sector in the Kingdom. The lecture covered various issues of special concern to HR managers such as recruitment, training and retention of target human resources and the ways this process impacts the overall organization performance.
During the lecture, the guest speaker took numerous key questions from the class which consists mostly of HR managers and officers in various businesses in Riyadh.
The Law Department hosted lawyer and sports arbitrator, Said Alamri, to speak to the Sports Law class about the nature, implications and implementation of the sports law. Alamri explained to the class such issues as sports disputes, arbitration and the study of sports law. He spoke also about the Saudi Sports Arbitration Center (SSAC) in terms of formation, organization structure, committees and role in arbitration, pointing out the procedures of filing claims and appeals at the SSAC.
Alamri spoke also about the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) in Switzerland, highlighting its formation, objectives, and committees and the cases and issues it deals with.
The presentation was followed by a Q&A session, where the students raised numerous questions reflecting their interest in this domain and their realization of the increasing importance and need for sports lawyers and arbitrators in Saudi Arabia where the sports sector is taking an increasingly important role in the Saudi society and economy.
An MOU that includes study scholarships was signed between the university and the Kingdom Schools as part of the signatories’ realization of their joint academic interest and in appreciation of their institutional cooperation and their joint vision to make it sustainable.
YU Vice-President, Prof. Houssam Ramadhan, and the Kingdom Schools General Overseer, Dr. Nasser Almilhem signed the MOU in a special reception at the Kingdom Schools on 18 December 2017.
Prof. Ramadhan stated that this MOU is part and parcel of general agreements between both parties where they will join efforts to enhance their educational services.
By virtue of this MOU, the university will allocate a number of exclusive scholarships to graduates of the Kingdom Schools, help prepare the schools’ students to university life through a number of training and educational programs, and collaborate closely with the schools in matters related to the admission of their graduates at Al Yamamah. The MOU also covers the organization of joint activities and events between the two sides at the local and international levels in addition to providing training programs and workshops to the Kingdom Schools teaching staff.
On the occasion of the UN Arabic Language Day, celebrated annually on December 18, Ghazi Algosaibi Chair for Cultural and Development Studies organized a public lecture entitled, “Features of Writing between Men and Women”, on December 12, 2017 at Shaikh Mohammed bin Ibrahim Alkhudair Hall.
Algosaibi Chair invited Dr. Hussein Manasrah, professor of modern literary criticism and modern Arabic literature at the Faculty of Arts, King Saud University to give an informative lecture about the distinctive stylistic features of men’s writing verses women’s writing. In his lecture, Manasrah pointed out the main similarities and differences in style between a text written by a man and another text written by a woman.
Manasrah used numerous examples from modern Arabic literature by famous novelists to illustrate his points.
The lecture was attended by Head of Board of Trustees, Mr. Khalid Alkhudair, University President, Prof. Hussein Alfreihi, University Vice-President, and Prof. Houssam Ramadan, in addition to deans, faculty members and students.
Domino’s Pizza head of marketing for MENA, Mr. Ibrahim Alsuhaibani, visited the International Marketing class and spoke to the students about job and experience in marketing.
Alsuhaibani spoke mainly about effective marketing in the service sector, focusing particularly on the food and beverages sector. His presentation gave detailed information about the market research and the uniqueness of each community in terms of their eating habits and preferences and how this influences the decisions of the marketing team.
He spoke also about Domino’s Pizza’s deep interest in market research as a vital tool of identifying consumption trends in the society, which the company relies on in developing their quality service and launching their campaigns. “It turns out that the careful study of the market has helped us greatly in learning about our customers’ preferences and habits, and enabled us to retain our loyal customer population by devising detailed development and quality assurance plans,” he said.
The presentation was concluded with a Q & A session.
Four young Saudi women in senior executive positions in the banking sector addressed the students in the women section and their guests from KSU, PNU and Alfaisal University about enablement of Saudi women, their personal experience in leadership and their opinions about the realization of Vision 2030 on December 16, 2017 in the Main Auditorium.
The event, which was started by a short play entitled “Saudi Women between the Past and the Present” and performed by Yamamers, was initiated by the idea of creating an electronic platform to connect Saudi women with their sisters in leadership positions in the corporate sector to seek advice, guidance and support.
Hosted by Mai Aleisa, announcer at the Saudi sports channel, the guests maintained that the recent developments in Saudi Arabia bring a lot of opportunity to Saudi women who have always been eager to play their full role to serve the community and prove that their potential is a key factor in the realization of Vision 2030.
The panel consisted of Ms. Noura Alyousef, head of wealth management at UBS, Saudi Arabia, Ms. Ghada Almazi, head of investment performance analysis unit at HSBC and executive chair of Mashurah, Dr. Reem Alfryan, head of business women affairs at the Council of Saudi Chambers, Ms. Nibal Alem, executive vice-president at Silah for business enablement, and Ms. Samiah Abdrabbo, special needs consultant.
Members of the Debate Club split into a proposition and an opposition to debate whether private higher education should be non-profit or not in public debate they organized on December 12, 2017 at Room C001.
The proposition team that consisted of Sultan Alattar, club president, Mohammed Samir and Abdulmalek Alquraini, argued that higher education is a very important and sensitive community service that must not be commercialized, and therefore, should not be for-profit. They focused mainly on the quality of education which must be maintained regardless of the market rules of supply and demand and the net profit guiding principle of the market.
Speaking against that proposition, the opposition team, which consisted of Alwaleed Alomair, Mohammed Alakil and Mohammed Alazani, argued that numerous private universities exist in the world and the fact that they are not non-profit had no bearing on the quality of their programs or the qualification of their graduates. On the contrary, they believed that there is no harm in higher education institutions existence as service providers like any business where competitiveness plays a major role in motivating the business owner to seek excellence and competitiveness.
The debate was very well organized in terms of debate format and adjudication. The audience was highly engaged in the debate and asked numerous questions and made comments to the debaters.
After the vote and the judges’ decision, the opposition team was declared the debate winner.
This debate is one in a series of debates the club is planning for this academic year.
