The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, are a set of 17 interconnected global goals adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. These goals are designed to address a wide range of social, economic, and environmental challenges facing the world. The overarching aim is to promote prosperity while protecting the planet.
Sustainable Development Goals
These goals, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provide a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace, prosperity, and well-being by 2030. They provide a framework for countries, organizations, and individuals to work together to create a more sustainable and equitable world.
Al Yamamah University is dedicated to supporting the United Nations’ 17 SDGs, and it participates in cross-sectoral dialogs about them. For instance, it organized the Family Business Forum, where local, national, and international speakers held discussions about this important topic. YU staff also participate in international conferences where they present their research about several topics that are related to the SDGs. The University has also been collecting data about the SDGs and has been participating in the Times Higher Education Ranking since 2022. YU supports various SDGs by spreading awareness about issues that are of interest to women i.e. the annual breast cancer awareness campaign (SDG 5), supports sustainability sessions in Architecture (SDG 11), and organizes a plethora of well-being activities for faculty, staff, and students (SDG 3).
YU also collaborates with NGOs like the Saudi Charitable Society for Alzheimer’s Disease, the Saudi Paralympic Committee, Alrajhi Humanitarian, and others, where it provides awareness sessions and volunteer opportunities for students, thus supporting SDGs 10, 13, 14, 15, and 16. YU also believes in educating its students through specific courses for the SDGs. For instance, in the College of Law, students take courses like Human Rights (SDG 16), Medical Law (SDG 3 & 16), Banking Law (SDG 12), and Rights of Women and Children (SDG 5). In the College of Business, students attend classes in Human Resources Management (SDG 8), Consumer Behavior (SDG 12), Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility (SDG 16), and Information Security Risk Management (SDG 16). In the College of Engineering and Architecture, students attend classes in Sustainability in Architecture (SDGs 6,7 and 13), Industrial Control Systems and Automation (SDG 9), and Manufacturing Systems (SDG 12).
